Fall River Fly Fishing

The Fall River is a stunning spring-fed creek that supports some of the strongest populations of wild trout in California.

As the largest spring-fed river in California, the Fall River produces an abundance of aquatic insects, thanks to its lush underwater vegetation. The hatches here can be legendary, often sparking epic feeding frenzies from large, wild trout.

The primary hatches on the Fall River include Pale Morning Duns (PMDs), Baetis, and Hexagenia, with a solid Trico hatch occurring on the upper river in late summer and early fall. Most classic mayfly patterns are effective. These fish here tend to favor slim, realistic, low-riding dry flies.

Each trip includes lunch and is fully tailored to match your goals for the day.

Target Species

These trips are primarily offered from the last Saturday in April through November, depending on water temperatures. We target rainbow trout and some brown trout, using a mix of euro nymphing and dry fly fishing with 3–6 weight rods.

Where We Fish

A typical morning on the Fall River begins by meeting your guide at a designated location, then heading to the boat launch for a cool, peaceful ride to your starting point for the day’s fishing. Most mornings, we aim to begin by casting dry flies on a Spinner Fall, if conditions allow. Throughout the day, we try to catch fish using all three primary techniques: dry flies, nymphs under an indicator on intermediate lines, and pulling leeches. You can expect to spend about 8 hours on the water.
