Sacramento River Fishing

The Lower Sacramento River around Redding, California, is a fly fishing paradise! The Sacramento is the largest river in California, with some prime sections for trout fishing.

Our trips on the Lower Sac are primarily float fishing with one of our expert guides. We are happy to accommodate any requests and will often offer spey fishing trips, using the vessel as a taxi to and from shore locations.

For our float trips, we strongly recommend only two anglers, but we can take three upon request. This is common for family trips where an adult just wants to watch the kids catch ’em!

This is a year-round fishery that remains stable with ideal water temperatures and excellent seasonal runs of steelhead. Come experience one of the most popular fisheries in California, and you’ll see why it is so highly regarded!

Target Species

The Lower Sacramento is all about big rainbows and steelhead. The average Rainbow Trout is 17” but fish greater than 20” are common. We target a wide variety of structures, including elevation changes, pools, riffles, and runs—this is classic trout tailwater.

We target these fish mainly by nymphing with 5-6 weight rods, but we can mix in larger streamers, especially when spey fishing. We often use a unique technique we call Euro drifting—tightlining nymphs through productive stretches with no indicators. It’s a blast and a unique fly fishing experience to try out.

Where We Fish

In early August, the first 5 miles of the river open for fishing. While the weather can be hot during this time, the river is teeming with healthy, well-fed fish.

We have many different ramps we can access to tailor the fishing day to your requests. Half-day floats cover 2-3 miles, and full days usually cover 5-6 miles. This river is unique in that it can change every day, but we can always find productive water. We can have productive fishing from 3,000 CFS all the way to 30,000 CFS.
